Running to Represent District 6

Hawai'i County Council

Justin Canelas is running for Hawaiʻi County Council District 6 to serve Kaʻū, Volcano, and South Kona - the place he proudly calls home. Justin and his wife live in Nāʻālehu, where they steward Manadina Farm and are raising their first child.

Justin currently serves as the Environmental Management Commissioner for District 6, representing Kaʻū on critical environmental issues impacting Hawaiʻi Island. In this role, he works within county government, collaborates with departments and commissioners, and navigates complex bureaucracy to advocate for his district - experience he will bring directly to the County Council.

Justin founded Mauka to Makai Eatery, a mission-driven farm-to-table restaurant sourcing over 80% of its ingredients from Kaʻū and Hawaiʻi Island farmers. When a $1.5 million EPA Zero Waste grant he co-wrote was awarded to Recycle Hawaiʻi, he stepped into the role of Program Director, creating local green jobs, expanding youth leadership opportunities, and helping build a Zero Waste movement now recognized statewide.

Through his work, Justin has donated thousands of free meals and pounds of produce to the community, supported local nonprofits with grant writing and strategic planning, organized cultural site restorations and cleanups, and worked alongside Kānaka Maoli to protect kuleana land.

Justin’s experience in community advocacy - from rural upstate New York to the urban South Bronx - combined with his current role in county government, gives him the skills to secure resources, build partnerships, and deliver results across District 6, while staying grounded in the values of aloha ʻāina, local stewardship, and protecting the unique character of Kaʻū, Volcano, Miloliʻi, and South Kona.

I am Elsa Kalanikauleleiaiwi Dedman, retired Research Physician, and am honored to share about my love and aloha for Justin Canelas and his supportive wife, Jasmine and baby, Hulali.  Given the core of Justin’s purpose in life, I am amazed at Justin’s optimism and “can-do mindset and attitude” providing the VERY BEST for our Community and making everyone a Priority.

I have witnessed Justin’s work supporting Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, Kāwā and coastline plans extending to Miloli’i Fishing Village in protecting our precious resources and ecosystems in preservation for the next generations to cherish their living classroom.

Justin's dedication to youth education spoke volumes at the 37th Annual National Bioneers Conference in Berkeley, California in 2026. Through Recycle Hawaii, Ka'ū High School students participated and presented their hard work at the conference, showcasing their proactive, hands-on solutions for keeping our community sustainable — an ongoing benefit to local schools and families.

As a Board Member, I am deeply grateful for Justin's legal expertise and his continued support in establishing Kilohana Ka'ū as a successful Non-Profit 501(c)(3). His immediate dedication to its mission — to preserve and restore lawful and equitable ʻāina stewardship and relationships with the lineal and cultural kānaka ʻōiwi descendants to mālama the cultural and natural resources of Ka'ū in perpetuity — has been invaluable.

You can surely count on Justin Canelas as his Position for County Council and Vision for District 6 STANDS WITH ONENESS BY OUR PEOPLE FOR OUR PEOPLE!"
